Top Bunk
we’ve made it to the top bunk now and you lie back
 and poise your mind
 on sheets spread
 across a starry night
and I curl in around you

 i climbed up here
 to hold my breath
to see some light beyond the sun
 to see the shapes
that shift in my closed eyes
 whenever our lips are locked
 in a secret promise

maybe we flew too close to the sun
and bathed in melted wax, we die
 but we are not
 the misfortunate ones,
 though we burn
 like the children of Pompeii
 you and i

 and if it were raining,
we’d look down at the drops
 because we stuck our flag
 in the top bunk
we’re the kid who has got
 what everyone wants
 so lay back
 hold your breath
 close your eyes
