Scrap
Burrowed in the dirt deep under the porch
an involuntary whimper sneaks from her aching snout.
She warily scrutinizes Privilege the alpha
as he wolfs down his winning meal
then lounges comfortably in his purple painted home.
Darling and Wanted's barreling bodies tumble into view
as their razor teeth slash at each other's throats.
Trained to fight, snarl, and bite
her kin thrive living up to Master's expectations
Scrap is afraid.
Trapped inside the rusty chain link fence
and a pit bull's body, she withdraws
further into the dusty asylum.
Diverting her attention from the savages’ piercing growls,
She envisions Lucky next door promisingly
enjoying a pampering from Nice Master.
Night falls and
her bulging ribs painfully drag on the dirt
as she squeezes out from the refuge
timidly shuffling her limp paws forward
as her drooping eyes search for scraps,
snatching all that she can in the shadow of her siblings.
