Serendipity
Serendipity,
An unexpected phone call from a friend from the past,
Reminiscing about the good old days
Of wild adventures, and the warmth of the crackling campfire
with ooey gooey marshmallows,
The color of clouds.
Those clouds which we used to gaze at while
Laying on our backs and confiding our fears in each other
About the future.
That unknown future in which success comes at you
Speeding like a bullet.
That is serendipity.
The first spoonful of an ice cream sundae;
The hot fudge and ice cream intertwining to a
Puzzling combination of icy hot temperatures down my throat.
That throat which I clear oh so many times when I’m nervous;
Nervous with you.
The best kind of nervousness,
When butterflies take flight in circles around the walls of my stomach.
The walls around me which you promise to always break down
To reach my soul.
That is serendipity.
Swimming under the covers with a book in my hand,
The scent of knowledge and possibilities.
The smooth texture of paper dances across my fingertips
Until this book dazzles me to the fullest extent and I am absorbed.
Absorbed like that stain is in my old t-shirt,
But I don’t mind;
That t-shirt smells like you;
The musk of old cologne and dried paint.
I inhale the familiarity.
Oh, how I love familiarity.
But that’s not serendipity.
Serendipity is unexpected.
The unknown is serendipity.
