"We are the ones who give meaning to these objects in space. A stick can be a gun. A ship can be a soul. Or a television show can be important. Even if no one watches it."-Joss Whedon

Hips sway like a sybaritic pendulum,
Thoughts tick, tick, ticking,
The product of a thousand splendid gears,
Turning like brass whirligigs, but always
Tick, tick, ticking.

Hands chasing each other in an endless circle,
Hearts, tick, tick, ticking,
Singing the industrial song of mechanized mockingbirds.
Chirping their song to the soulless night, and always
Tick, tick, ticking.

Eyes, a perfect anchor, the epicenter of time,
Tick, tick, ticking away.
Glazed over like December morning,
Frozen in nonpareil torment, with all around them
Tick, tick, ticking.

Smiles straighten in an industrialized smirk,
Tick, tick, ticking into place.
A mechanical bemusement,
Traced with the metallic taste of hope,
Tick, tick, ticking like clockwork.

The author's comments:
This piece is something of a satire, for it portrays people and feelings as pieces of a clock, which can be analyzed and understood, but that is never really the case. The beauty of people and of emotion is that it can't be fully understood...and yes...I did write this while staring at a clock through most all of Pre-Calculus a few days ago...
