When Dreams Escape

Half empty cup
of ice cold tea
on the nightstand
blocking the clock
that reads
sometime past 12
blackness
except for the periodic glow
from the window
a restless head
up and down
from the pillow
a restless brain
coaxed away
from sleep by
undefined thoughts
circling
until
somehow
they come out through
hastily written notes
dreams wait
lingering on the edges
for their moment
the only time when dreams escape
