Where I Came From
I came from music and laughter,
From the sandbox in the backyard and the strawberry patch beside it.
I came from creeks and catfish,
From sweet peas and pawpaw trees.
I came from rips in clothes made by the times I met the pavement,
And from watching them be fixed by my Grandmas nimble fingers.
I came from Easter eggs at Selmer Park,
And bubbles blown towards wind.
From tea parties without tea, and silly smiles caught on camera.
I came from art projects at Christmas,
And cookies made with too much icing.
I came from sunflowers and trampolines,
From strong black coffee and bacon sandwiches.
I came from the Piano in the foyer,
And the struggle to reach the peddles underneath.
From The Beatles and Paul McCartney.
And all these memories are kept in my mind,
Or in the boxes under my dresser.
Some are stored away in old cameras, that haven’t been found,
On films that haven’t been developed or seen in years,
And boxes in the basement, rarely brought out.
Though they seldom come around now,
I’m reminded everyday of all the things I came from.
