For a Minute
She’s beautiful, and they know it
But she ain’t got time for their opinions
It just might blow her cover if
One day they dig deeper and discover
That on the inside, she’s fragile
Might be winning the war, but the battle’s hard
On her heart, wearing down on her soul
She doesn’t even know when she’ll come up again
For air, seems like racing with despair
Has left her head spinning
Round and round, her mind rushing for answers
With a stitch in her side, she’s just wishing for a moment
To catch her breath, freeze all time and space
It’s amazing, what she doesn’t see
All of that overwhelming beauty, set free
He covers up, tries his best to toughen up
Rolls down his sleeves on the pain and tries to find
Another way to cope, one that will make them proud
To call him their son
He’s looking for ways to make them stop making fun
Who’s to say he’s the one with the problem?
When they’re the ones who hate themselves inside
While he walks tall and filled with pride
Confident that he will be true to himself till the day he dies
Won’t believe the lies they tell
That he’ll never be good enough
He’s got it rougher than most, but that doesn’t mean
He stops trying
Defying their expectations
The limitations they have set on how high he can soar
He’ll give more of the hell they deserve
But not with words, but with every moment
That he is happy beyond belief
In his own shoes, being who he was always meant to be
She hears the shouts past midnight
Another hour with no sleep, feeling defeat
Sinking in deeper and deeper
Always feeling like it’s her fault that their love didn’t last
Reliving the past in slow, painful detail
Fighting back tears to no avail
Wondering why it takes so long to end the fight
Why it takes so much to make it through the night
The thought seemed so simple
Everything just needed a little work
For something to stir deep inside
The two of them
Make them understand the truth in them
That just because it doesn’t work now
Doesn’t mean it never will
There are two kids that depend on them still
To hold the pieces in place
And maybe, for a minute, pretend like everything’s okay
So that maybe, just maybe
For a minute
It’ll all turn out that way
