I am white
so I know no pain -- none
that matters, anyways

But on the inside
I feel brown -- I am
Russian, if that counts

A Soviet mestizo,
I have history, too -- even
though I am whiter than you

The author's comments:

I was pondering how because I'm white I "can't" have an interesting backstory or heritage -- we may not have fled Cuba, but my father and his family, all Russian, moved here from Soviet Estonia in the 1980s. I have a story, too.
