Afraid
Afraid of something that isn’t there
But comes around to haunt you
It isn’t real and you know it’s true
But still, it bothers you
To think that a silly little phantom fear
Could take over your every move
Is frightening in itself, I’ll admit
And even more so, when it doesn’t exist
To keep on running
Nearly dying from exhaustion
And not knowing what it is that you are running from
Is as ludicrous as it probably sounds
But not when it’s chasing you
Cowering in the shadows
Shrieking and crying
Not even daring to open your eyes
To see the monster that growled in your nightmares
And swallowed you whole while you wriggled and screamed.
