Sometimes it roars,
Devours my limbs
With its sinking teeth,

Leaving me hunched
Over and gasping
For breath.

Other times I feel
It creeping, pulsing
In the pit of my stomach.

It beats,
Beats,
Beats--

I twitch and
Crumble,
Crippled by it.

Mostly it lies
Dormant,
Always present,

Always haunting
Me, eager for
A moment

To spring up
And paralyze
Me with its claws.

It lives and
Yet I live
With it;

In a
Precarious
Balance,

It forces me
To face
Life and death.
