What I Saw Before Me
Flags are held in memory
While tears are poured
From the eyes
Of the families
Who’ve lost so much more
Than what I see before me
A mustang or two
Weeps as a brother
Comes through dressed in red
A box held in hand
Waiting for the ashes
Of what I see before me
Many fall to their knees
A sight full of mourning
They can only imagine
The pain that went through me
A stab in the heart
Of what I see before me
It’s hard to see your uncle cry
His eyelids burn and trouble me
His daughter pretends different
A tight smile upon her face
It’s difficult to understand
What I see before me
Red, white, and blue flows free
With bitter fights and arguing
The protesters we do not see
Are screaming lies
Contrary
To what I see before me
Dictators create chaos
A broken family is lost
They are blinded by their hatred
A quick downfall, so be it
Until we are moved to
What I see before me
The American flag has stamped
The ground to mourn the loss
Of a friend as so many
Line the streets
I cannot believe
What I see before me
Football players on the roof
As my fellow classmates salute
I can’t help but wonder
If these people really cared
Or if they just wanted to be
What I saw before me
