The Walk-off
Championship game, bases loaded, bottom of the 7th inning.
Down by two with two outs. I walk up to the plate
Knowing it’s do or die. There are only two ways for this game to end:
Get out and end the game or a walk-off.
I step in the box trying not to think about hitting a walk-off.
Just take it one pitch at a time.
I worked it to a full count, and
Now it is for sure do or die. If the pitch
Is there, swing at it. And it was a meatball,
Perfect down the middle, and
Boom!
Off the bat, into a gap in the outfield.
The exact way I had imagined it.
The winning run scored, and I was mobbed by teammates.
Seeing all the parents cheering and the other team walk off the field with their head down.\
We are going to state!
What if we were them?
What would it be like?
The pitcher so nervous, just shaking.
Bases loaded, anything could happen.
One player yells,”Force at any base!”
The next pitch is perfect, down the middle.
The batter swings, and
Boom!
It goes into a gap in the outfield,
Over the center-fielder’s head.
The winning run scores and their fans are cheering and we walk off the field with our heads down.
They are going to state...
