Because I sit here
Because I don’t smile
Because it’s lonely
But not because it’s alone
Because surrounded by stale faces
Because they were left out on the shelves
Because mothers were busy
Because fathers were busy
Because adults were too grown up
Because teens pretended to be
Because no one listened
Because they were too busy to be busy
Because their own lives consumed themselves
Because there was nothing else for them
Because they were nothing,
Because I will not be
Because I don’t want to be
