“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.”

― Mary Oliver

I woke him up before
I woke myself
Blankets
like tendrils of the inky
night come to strangle me
wound around my legs
pressing me down into the recesses
of the fabric and springs until i
sobbed,
with the heavy pressure in my chest
this weight of dreams
making my heartbeat echo in my throat

He unravels these tendrils,
his hands offer a gentle thrumming
liquid calm in every capillary
and i confess
that I cannot
sleep
without him
