The subconscious
The light hours are to be savoured
For the subconscious lies in slumber
Undisturbed, quiet and cool
It remains behind a locked door
Stored together with your unwanted thoughts
Who thrash through the bars of a cage without a key
Your attentive mind protects you from its damage
But when the mind is at rest
The subconscious escapes
To play with your sanity
As the mind becomes vulnerable in sleep
It transforms into a darkened haze
And slips unseen between the bars
The battle for power is won and
The subconscious takes over
It beckons to the hidden devils
Who slither between the cage bars
And dance behind your closed eyelids
The subconscious is omnipotent and
You are a captive of terror
You are not the controller anymore
You must simply endure
As twisted recollections overpower
Pleasant thoughts and peaceful dreams
You cannot wake but are trapped
At the mercy of the subconscious
Warped images and malicious thoughts
Swirl in sickening spirals
And the voices chant:
‘We are the unwanted thoughts...’
Sunlight filters through the curtain’s cracks
And the subconscious scarpers
Back to its cage of darkness
The sheets are twisted and your
Heart beats against your ribcage
You try to trap the subconscious
But it cannot be grasped and remains
Lurking amidst the shadows of your mind
But at night the subconscious returns
To play with your sanity
