Made of Earth
I could have sworn
my collarbone traced a vegetable garden
and my fingers creaked
like straining vines
my skin like soil
letting me burrow in its depths
until straggly roots as
tangles of fragile limbs
battled through
I could have sworn
I was a shaded flower pot
with stable footing, but
too easily moved
and for every petal, three thorns
for every stem, compassion
I could have sworn
that I crumbled like dirt
and nurtured weeds in
breathless tenderness only to
suffocate at their fingertips
and I could have sworn
that I am made of earth
