A Simpler Time

the way the old floor creaked
reminded him of before his age
before technology
it reminded him of the sea
and all its sweet simplicity
it brought back memories
of past times
country twang
how the river sang
on its way down the mountain
the warmth from the setting sun
the serenity of the full moon
the comfort of one's own bed
the sadness of the cemetery
being surrounded by the dead
the smell of pine needles
underfoot
it reminded him of a better time
just that one sound
in the middle of the night
