Cognizance
I see you there just across the hall
Laughing with your friends as I laugh with mine.
And I know you see me, too.
We cast each other furtive glances but
Quickly look away as the other turns.

We walk past; You go left.
 I go right.
Pretending we're not aware of each other at all.
As if we're just two strangers; another face in the crowd.

 We speak in secret.
 Where it's safe
Where no one can see us
So they won't think badly of us.

I know it's wrong, but it needs to be right.
 You're with her, I know,
 But I can't help myself.

 It's too hard not to.

And hopefully one day you'll see
Just how happy you could be
 With me.

 But for now it's pretend.
Oh, how I wish this game would
 End.
