Bad Dreams
The darkest dream he ever told me in detail
Was about the sea.
And maybe that was enticing to me
As I needed the waves
Rolling and crashing over my mind but
Missing the scattered fragments
Of my heart because those will wash away like
Another insignificant grain of sand.
He whispered low in my ears, sweet as honey
About the currents he traveled
The lapping water making the most beautiful music
He had ever heard, a melody
Sung to him by the sirens in his head and
He painted pictures of finding
Oneself and with that golden discovery comes revelations
Of what hope means too.
The wind spoke volumes of the sky and billowed
In the sails giving direction.
I was a fool, starry eyed and confused I asked softly
'But that sounds divine
Not a nightmare at all, something I would strive to be
Able to imagine when I cast into dreams.'
He lifted my chin, his crystal eyes locking in my dull ones
'I never came home to you.'
And now those nightmares rise up in me too.
The dreams when I don’t
See the etches of his jaw line and our silhouettes pressed together
Are the most terrifying haunting of sleep.
