Better This Way
It went straight through my head
A gunshot that was almost unexpected
Brought to my knees
Clutching the wound that won’t stop bleeding
Trying to take hold of the sweeter memories
But they’re fleeting
Disappearing somewhere I never thought I’d be
Now I’m here, alone in the dark
And you can’t be next to me
Was this destined to happen, at the start of it all?
Not even a second chance to keep this
From falling apart
Rips right through my heart to know
It will never be the same
I look into your eyes, you stare through me
You’ve got nothing more to gain
From me, from this, from this heap of broken pieces
No time for a clean break
Just stand here, so still, so quietly, and wait
Time will slip by and soon it will be over
Never mind how much colder it is
Waiting here, for this
Who says it’s worth it?
Hours turn to days, weeks and years
I’ve remained, still standing here
Through the thunder, wind, and rain
Through the torrent and the hurricane
But you’re not coming back
And there’s nothing to chase after
Not anymore
This is what goodbyes are for
I just never knew until today
Until there was nothing left to say
Nothing but a solemn smile and “it’s better this way”
