I Don't Know

I don’t know much;
Like why grass is green or if Heaven is real—
And why good things end.

I don’t know why I felt the way I did,
Or why you caught my eye when no boy could—
Or why you felt the same.

I don't know why I enjoyed your lips on mine—
You're hair ticking my face
As you stand on your toes.

I don’t know why the world is so mean;
Why so many look away
When they see me smile at you
And your hand wrapped with mine.

I don't know how a family can forget to love –
A father screaming,
A mother squeezing a picture,
And tears falling.

I don’t know why your family turned us away;
Or why you came with me--
Why you chose me over them.

I don’t know what led us to the park,
With only two thin jackets
And hope for survival.

I don’t know how people can be so cruel
When they see love between two girls with nothing--
Or why they’d want to hurt them.

I don’t know why you had to go;
Maybe God felt you were special and let you meet peace with
White Gates and golden floors—
While I was left to suffer in this cruel world alone.
