Straight Lines
All she knows is straight lines
she hates her belly
for being an oval
for she has not been taught
circumference and radius
and the good of pi
she blushes at the sight of
roundness, ragged edges
the vulgarity of
sharp corners and smeared margins
she has learned
straight lines instead of spheres.
her education
has sacrificed her depth perception
for the ease of one dimension.
she was taught to walk
on a balance beam,
on a pedestal,
no bumps in the road
or cracks in the sidewalk
raised by smooth surfaces and
straight lines
how can she not forget
the world is round
