Why is Cheerleading a Sport?
Dear Haters,

Why is Cheerleading a sport?
Because it makes me Believe-
Because it’s,
“An activity involving physical exertion and skill,
in which an individual or team competes against another or others
for entertainment.”
Because I’m obsessed with the adrenaline, plus the rush,
before I sprint onto the big blue mats.
Because of the silly shakes and superstitions.

Because of the amazement in the crowds eyes.
Because of the “You guys are amazing” and “We love to watch you ”
(Even when we bomb the routine)
Determination, Passion, Hard Work.
Because we have struggles and victories as well as expectations to reach.
Because hard work and hope that the impossible is possible.

Because it hurts but it helps…
But it hurts--my bones, muscles, and mentality.
Because of the inability to sit on the toilet or walk down the stairs
from the daily strengthening exercises:
single leg squats, burpees, push ups, and sleds.

Because it makes me go crazy,
but I like that,
because it reminds me that not everything in life is sane.
And life goes on, and on-
and on,
but cheerleading stops that for just 2 minutes and 30 seconds
so I’m able to stop in time, enjoying the precious moments.

Because it’s not just pom poms and mini skirts,
combined with ditsy cheerleaders.
We are smart.
Because it allows me to get a career;
going to college with a $48,000 scholarship.

Because the championship rings
and those ugly white satin national champions jackets
that every cheerleader dies for.
Because it has made me a better person, leader, and friend.
Because I now understand that dreams really do come true.
People believe in me.
Because no matter how good I get I can always go up.
Because of all the little girls that look up to us;
but also because the little girl inside me who’s strived to be who I am now.
Because no one understands it,
and I have the gift to fight for it.

Because it makes me Believe-
That one day everyone will give cheerleading a chance,
just like I did.

Sincerely,
the little girl who had a dream and something to fight for.

I wrote this for my poetry class. Its an epistle. I really didn't like it that much before but it turned into something great and I just wanted to share it because it inspired me and hopefully it inspires others to never stop fighting for something you believe in.
