Stay Still
Strands of wavy brown hair
Drift down from her loose bun
as she yearns
for the first and last time
to feel alive and free
She doesn’t worry about
Keeping her makeup flawless
or her posture elegant
She doesn’t care
that her hair is tousled
or that the melancholy sky
is crying gray tears
She just wants to
Dance among the breeze
Twirl between the trees
Taking her heels off
and letting the grass
Soak up her soul
Like the evening rain
Even if she has to stay still
She has to stay still
as still as a painting.
