Best Time of Year
My happiness starts with a cool breeze,
blowing through the now leafless trees
Then turns to a sniffle,
or a sneeze.
I know it’s coming,
I can feel it in my bones.
The weatherman says,
“The first frost of the year has hit,”
and then I know.
It’s almost here.
I walk into Target,
see Christmas lights strung.
“Too early!” People say
while I slightly smile away.
Bright and early,
I watch Mom pull out of the driveway.
Black Friday shopping,
Oh, what’s up her sleeve?
As I stare out the window,
a faint shot of white,
what could that be?
A trick of the light?
But then I realize,
oh my,
it’s just about here.
Small flakes come down,
soft at first,
and then heavy,
heavier,
so heavy that it sticks.
The first snow has finally hit!
Not too soon after,
my heart is filled with laughter.
Carols, presents, family,
all things that represent the best time of year.
There’s a sense of calm and happiness in the air,
Family and friends gather from all around,
just for that special time of year.
Christmas,
Christmas is here.
