Locating Who I Am
I am from Bibles,
From Veggie-Tales and Sunday Brunch.
I am from strong bricks,
And warm sunshine on green grass.
I am from vivacious flower gardens,
Whose annual buds know that some things never change.
I am from pianos I can pour my heart into and Family Game Night,
From Kramer and Paulus.
I am from pitchy singing competitions and flamboyant laughter,
From petty arguments and sweet reconciliation.
I am from “Don’t forget the reason for the season!”
And from “Santa Claus isn’t real.”
I am from Marilyn and Werner,
Jovial memories of pie alamode.
From “There’s always room for ice cream,”
“it slips between the cracks.”
From the car accident that took Grandpa and left tears,
And from the sepsis that stole Grandma and left emptiness.
Always waiting for me on my pillow,
Sat a plush purple bunny,
His floppy ears are good listeners,
And his smiles reassuring.
I am from those moments,
Whose annual buds know that some things never change.

Many people have been inspired by the author George Ella Lyon after he wrote his poem titled, "Where I'm From." His poem depicted what his life was like growing up mostly through images from his childhood. Since then, myriad poems have been written by people describing their homelife through the use of memories and objects from their past. My creative writing teacher gave me the assignment to write my own poem about where I'm from. So I did, and was very pleased with the results.
