Are We Alone?

“Are we alone?”
No, not you and I.
We are not alone.
Yet you ask… why?
How could we be alone?
You silly guy.
We are not alone.
No, not you and I.

But yes, it is just us.
The rest of humanity has long since gone.

Cut down by those who dared play God.
They are not coming back now,
So there is no need to cry.
We are not alone.
No, not you and I.

Though we are the last two,
The only two I’ve seen.
Sure, the birds are still in their trees
The fishes still in their seas
The various animals are still in between.
We are not alone.
No, not you and I.

I know you are uneasy,
Survivor’s guilt a tainted
Taste in your mouth.
But just remember,
Guilt tastes far better than dirt my dear.
So put it from your mind.
I don’t care what you heard
On the wind last night.
There is no one there!

This yell of solitude you heard?
Just a remnant from that broken time.
When we were overpowered.
Then condemned to die.

Where are you going? You cannot leave.
There is no one back there.
This home here is the very last one
You will ever see.

Please do not leave me.
You and I:
Without the both of us
We cannot survive.
I can see my pleas are in vain
You’re already set to go.
To chase a trick of your mind
You swear is an actuality.

You cannot come back if you go now.
To our old place of torment you wish to go.
Do you wish to defy our then God?
You wish to go back to that place of fire?
All for a lonely, disillusioned cry?

But since you’ve decided, then go.
Leave we behind and become you.
But you will surely miss I.

We cannot be alone,
But I… I can be alone.
You can be alone, too,
Without I.

So I guess now the question has changed.
We are not alone.
No, not you and not I.

But yes.
You are alone.
And now, so am I.

Without music, life would b-flat. <br /> So, what&#039;s the speed of dark?!?

@Writer_in_the_Shadows I say go for it :) You've got to use inspiration whenever you can and I'm not going to stand in the way of yours. I really like your take on the poem, it has tons of traction and I can feel your presence behind it. It's outstanding!

@watchmefly Your poem inspired me to write a poem that pretty much told the same story (in my opinion). I was wondering if it would be alright with you if I posted it on TeenInk (also including that your poem inspired me). Here it is: You and I Together we can't be alone Not you and not I. I can't be alone WITH you Nor you with I You say we're all alone Just you and just I But together we are not Not you and not I. All of them may have gone May have left you and I. But we're never alone If I have you and you I But you want to look for them. Want to discard the you and I They are gone, should be forgotten, Because they left you and I. And then- You'd be right The you without I THEN you'd be alone. The you- With no I. I apologize if this comment gets turned horizontal, which will completely mess up the line breaks.

Wow. This is... Just... Wow. I can't even describe how awesome this poem is. It's... Amazing. But that still doesn't come close. I guess "Amazing" will have to do for now until someone creates a new word that can describe it better.
