Dear Anorexia
Dear Anorexia,
Hello, it is I,
one of your millions of followers,
and I have a proposition.
Dear Anorexia,
There’s this girl, you see,
and I love her
like you love destruction.
I never cared about death before,
never minded your stupid manipulation before,
now I watch a fire turn to ashes -
Dear Anorexia,
You are killing my friend.
Dear Anorexia,
Come haggle me all you want,
use my body as your feeding ground -
but get away from her.
Dear Anorexia,
She is worth so much more than you,
She is like soft sunlight that glimmers
through an October windowpane,
and I know you can’t comprehend
true radiance,
but know that I can,
and I would gladly take a
gun to your head,
I would fight you for both her and I -
Dear Anorexia,
Death is not a career path,
she wants to change the world,
not black out for your meager salary
of lost opportunities and hospitalization.
Dear Anorexia,
Stop telling her she is useless,
she’s isn’t your reflection -
Dear Anorexia,
She does not deserve to have you in her,
She never asked for you to crash the party,
get the hell out of her party -
Dear Anorexia,
Contrary to your twisted mindset,
food is necessary for basic existence,
so get out of her head
and let her eat it.
Dear Anorexia,
I love her, there are no bounds on how much I love her,
and I know in your eyes
“love” is a synonym for erosion,
but to me it is the equivalent of sacrifice,
and I will do anything if only you will let her go.
Dear Anorexia,
I never realized that you had strangled me,
until you put the rope to her neck.
Dear Anorexia,
It’s time for you to get out.

This was originally written as slam, but can be read as free verse as well. The piece was inspired by watching my friend struggle with an ED, as I fought my own. For B.
