There's a Boy Out There
There's a boy out there
Putting danger to his lips
Like he can taste salvation
On the battered and broken bottle,
Like he wash away the memory of a girl
Clinging to his side, telling him not to go,
To wait a little while longer
There's a boy out there
With eyes so intense that
Thunderclouds and lightning bolts
Flash and rattle and rumble,
Sending her demons running,
Leaving her wanting to see his breakdown,
Be there when the rubble clears
To hold him tightly and never let go
There's a boy out there
With shoulders broad enough
To carry the weight of the world
And soldier on like it was nothing
A veritable Atlas,
Paying for the sins of his fathers
With the hearts of today's daughters
Who pray for forgiveness from Eve's grave mistake
There's a girl out there
Who swears she can
Hug away his fears, doubts, confusion,
Like they were childhood mishaps
And not the direness of adulthood
Like they were play-pretend shadows
To be chased away with laughter
And the light of a midnight lamp
There's a girl out there
Wishing war away so fervently,
Tiny earthquakes explode in her fingertips
And leave smudges on pages of white,
All so she and a boy from out there
Can build something from the tattered bits
Of a ragged good-bye and a half-empty promise
There's a girl out there
Who clings to parting compliments paid faithfully
Like they can help her weather
The storm of summer-time sluggishness,
Hours when blank walls are her only company,
Nights when Furies come calling and dole out nightmares,
Who clings to the thought of a boy out there
Putting danger to his lips and tasting salvation
When she wishes it was her
