summer beaches
the only things i remember about
sandy beaches
in the summer
are the people
and how they brought me there
to the cotton towel
in the noon heat
when the pebbled sand
scalded the feet
but the glass water
lapped at the shore
and waited there
while we laid flat
imitating.
and on many
of the pomegranate faces
sit layers of white that
have yet to sink in:
sunblock
and the half-dressed people
may sleep
on cotton towels
and despite noise
there is quiet
everywhere.
