When the eye well trained to suspect
Sees a shadow
A soft stain of ink on splotchy paper
What do we imagine?
A hand jostled to overturn their inkpot
As their arms are wrenched behind their back?
When the darkness forms a figure
What do we imagine?
A lurker who waits for the right moment?

The idea of a shadow
Of a silhouetted figure
Triggers only the worst thoughts

The torn clothing and messy hair
Of a black man walking the streets
There is only one thing we imagine.
There is only one thing we ever imagine.
