Our bodies were splayed across our bed
as we binge-watched Girls:
you were tired of waiting tables
and I was exhausted of studying
and writing, re-writing, editing, and submitting
resumes and cover letters to recruiters
that would not respond;
we were too fatigued to do anything:
we hadn’t kissed in weeks.
As I inched towards you,
you turned over
so I wouldn’t see who you were texting:
you’d much rather be on Instagram
these days,
as I unremittingly studied and worked.
I rolled to my side of our bed
and turned off the lights and TV
and feigned slumber;
then, I felt your cold hands
spooning me from behind
and heard, beneath my ear,
those three words that always comforted me
no matter the anxiety or lethargy.
With only a sliver of the moon
slithering into our room,
my lips found yours,
our hands interweaving:
we slept through the restless night.
