What if I told you that I was the last leaf
fluttering on the dancing edges of the trees?
What if I told you that I was the little girl
standing up in the life boat,
balanced on the surface of the world?
What if I told you I was a kite,
my strings tethered to the ground,
or candles at night,
or a chime made of tinkling glass?
And this is my secret:
I am terrified of the wind.
