Friend
I met you when we were kids
Undeveloped and simple minded
You told me harsh truths and I saw bold beauty your honesty
We’ve grown up together
You were always my rock, my anchor
Droplets fell from of my eyes and wrists and you told me it made me better, better than I was
You were my comfort during the lonely nights
You held me in your arms, strong, yet stiff
I tried push away but you insisted we stay in constant contact
I don’t like it when people touch me anymore
I ponder how others see you as an invisible friend
People never seemed to notice the way you never leave, not long enough anyways
I was glad they didn’t see your stone-cold face and scar-scattered skin
Sometimes I pretend they can’t see mine
When I made new friends I always felt you
Standing behind me, your hand on the small of my back
Breath cascading my neck, ice cold somehow leaving burns behind
Tonight I tuck myself into bed and hope you fall asleep before I do
The lights flicker off and I feel you there, just a little less this time
Small victories have always rewarded punishment with you
You never left me, even when I wanted you to
I should appreciate your consistency, your constant wisdom
You taught me things so well that I can’t unlearn them
I’ve tried a time too many
