I take a walk through the woods,
I appreciate the sounds and the sight.
Suddenly the dark night sky lights up,
the heavy flame climbing up the trees.
The fire locks eyes with me, showing no mercy.

It furiously goes up and darts my way!
Instincts hit and I take off running away!
Sweating! Shaking! Pounding! Racing!
Why is this happening to me?
God, I do not want to die!

Alone I first was I now see everyone running,
but running from what?
The fire is singing the hairs on the back of my neck!
Screams are now blurred in the back,
I can now only hear my heart throbbing.

More wrathful than ever he won’t stop,
panicked I bolt and jump a fence.
Pulsing! Crying! Swearing! Coughing!
The skies go back to night.
The light that glowed the night sky is extinguished.

I may have out ran him,
but the ashes have filled my lungs.
My chest aches of being caved in and I’ll never breathe again.
What did I do to deserve this?
I’m never playing with matches again!

The author's comments:

I was inspired to write this poem after a vivid dream I had that woke me breathless. I had researched what this dream may have meant and sources had pointed to someone's anger was affecting me and my stability. The night before this dream I had a fall out fight with a loved one that had changed much with our relationship.
