She smiled like she was keeping a secret between her cheeks

Like her teeth would come jangling out like peals of laughter

And only the sheer power of her lips could stop them.

Her tongue curled around the unborn grin

Dimples sprung from her mouth's corners like beads of hard-won sweat

She fought to keep her laughter in her throat

And I prayed that she would fail.
