when the stars come out

I hang out in the sky
  A beaming shine of silver
  Transparent and true

They look up at me often
For even when the times are bad
You fold your hands and send an upward thank you.
  They have stopped praying,
  Loving and believing
I miss the way things used to be
  When the stars came out

  It started out simple
  With the typical melted marshmallows
  Grilled burgers
Sparks of orange red and blue.
  Rapidly turning into stained negligence
  Looking down
  Empty bottles
  Used needles
  I mourn
  The loss of beautiful souls
I miss the way things used to be
  When the stars came out.
