On Happiness After Billy Collins "On Turning Ten"
The whole idea of it makes me feel
Glad that maybe the world is not all that bad.
It’s like pop rocks in water, they can't help but crackle.
Or a rainbow that can’t help but glow.
You tell me to keep my head level and not fall out of line.
But how can you not fall out of line with the type of world we have?
Everything feels helpless, so there needs to be people who can
Fall and soar.
But now I am stuck like a bird with clipped wings.
My greatest mentor has become not so great.
The sadness that has blighted me is more than I can handle.
This is the beginning of sadness.
The misery that has
Taken our world.
The unholy spirit that has taken us out.
Where we are left with nothing but sadness
It seems only yesterday I used to believe
The world was where people come to play but now I see
That the world is where sinners can play saints,
Clouds guard the rainbows,
And the poprocks stop popping.
