The beggar’s head throbs as the hangover hits him.

The air reeks of undisposed feces and hops.

The birds await the sun’s arrival, but the sun refuses to emerge.

To most, this would be stomach-retching, but to this man, it was a benchmark of life.

A horse and carriage approaches.
Click.
The click-clacking reverberates—endlessly closing faster…and faster.
Clack.
Panic engulfs his body; his body, eager to move, while his brain hesitates.

Unexpectedly, bones crush as the approaching horse and carriage clobbers his spine.

The rider, a businessman, sends him a pitiful look—sitting high in his trophy of wealth.

As the sound of hooves fade, the beggar unleashes an eerie cry.

His cry, heard for miles, breaks the eight hours of silence.
