Where I Am From
I am from a place of broken glass.
Why did they divorce?
Me?
My brother and I heard yelling through the thin walls.
Soon there would be a broom,
to sweep up the little crystals of broken glass.
Do you need a Band-Aid?
I am from a tightly knit sweater.
What kind of sweater?
A sweater that felt of love and soft fragments of wool
knit to keep each part of me warm,
from the bitter outside world.
A sweater that kept me safe and supported.
When could I knit my own?
I am from a bagel that is spread too thin.
What is my favorite spread?
First being in a dull classroom with rows of desks.
Then a gruesome 3-5pm track practice,
wearing a vibrant red and carolina blue uniform.
To volunteering.
Should I try a new kind of spread?
I am from a place of religion.
Spending my day with God in a UCC church.
See the children eager to learn about their faith?
My grandma saying prayers at dinner,
and beside our cozy beds at night.
Were my prayers loud enough?
