My Light, My Hope
Black velvet hands touch
The corners of the room
Always
Coming
Closer
Until a new candle is lit
The orange glow lights up
Faces
Dancing
Flickering
Jumping
With hot wax slipping down its body
I shudder with every trace
Of the night’s finger
Cold
Piercing
Needles for finger nails
Looking into the amber eyes of light
I blow out the candle

I wrote this poem after my best friend and I ceased our relationship. I want to emphasize that even though darkness and lonliness is terrifying, if your light is untrustworthy and dances around, taunting you and your fear, no longer rely on it. Face the darkness on your own and you'll be better off.
