I can see her now--in the breezy afternoon
between oranges, dried citrus fruits,
A whole chicken strung with fishing wire,
Persimmon and crystallized cinnabar,
and my favorite--
soft rolls of dough wrapped in muslin.
with filtered sun refracting
through the crowned glass
around her head like a meridian--
and she gathers the spices
saffron, sumac, fennel, mustard seeds
and she touches the dishcloths
and she pauses
and she smiles
