On turning fourteen

As a kid it was more special

like a cloud that only precipitated in cake

I ran around the balloons and happy party streamers

Knowing that, that would be the best day I’d have for a while

I felt like a harp,beautifully strung

creating the perfect harmony

but as I turned fourteen my high hopes dropped

along with my spirits

It was like a normal day

Like I was one year closer to death

instead of one year closer to growing up

Full of imagination and hope

I was like a butterfly

so carefree

My superpower was making sadness disappear

At seven, grape juice was a necessity

At nine, I had dreams of becoming a professional basketball player

All I had to do was grow up

At fourteen, my dreams vanished

Along with my abundance of grape juice

My anger grew more intense

While my hope slowly faded

I became a shadow of my younger self

Like a figment of everyone else’s imagination

Turning the big 1-4 wasn’t what i hope for

My father’s presence wasn’t there

He was in life bad at birthdays

But in death, he surly left his mark

Now, birthdays are like

Rotten cheese

Full of

Regret

At thirteen, I used to believe that

lying  under every bad situation

was  hope

But now every bad situation is

an amusement park

Where I can ride every ride

When you said "like I was one year closer to death instead of one year closer to growing up", I really felt that down to my core. I'm almost finished with high school, then I will be off in the real world starting my life, growing old, and eventually dying. Growing up is something I've feared for a long time, and it's hard to accept it. But each day is a journey and with age comes wisdom. Fourteen was a hard year for me, but I learned a lot about myself that year. I hope fourteen is an eye-opening year for you, and that you hold on tight to your dreams to eventually manifest them into something beautiful.
