Dust to Dust
We are mortals born with golden hearts and stardust in our eyes
Sheltered and loved and cherished like diamonds
Every shimmering sapphire protected
From glistening garnet to twinkling tanzanite
We start beautiful and extraordinary
But human hearts birth human greed
And eternal dissatisfaction.
Man starts scheming and taking and stealing
Desperate to end its unquenchable thirst
They take up iron and steel and begin their destruction
Crushing necks to cover their own in pristine pearls
Cracking and shattering worlds apart
to fill their empty hearts of pyrite
Waterfalls of aquamarine pour from sorrowful eyes
Rubies drip heavily from deep and painful wounds
And even when all that's left is dull black stone
They take whatever they can
Until all that's left
Is hopeless dust

It was the period before Writer's workshop and is was that day that comes every other week where i had to submit something, anything, and I had forgotten to do so. SO in the fifteen minute left of class and scribbled the first draft of this. I had some lines that had been bouncing around in my head: the very first line, "Bleeding rubies "/"crying sapphires" and from that came a poem that was unamed though i later titled it "Power" so I could put it on my old Wattpad account. After recieving feedback a week later I, for once, took serious time to go back over the piece and edit it, adding a lot. So now we have this version which I preceeded to turn in a couple contests. (It wasn't winner but as I mentioned before: It did get published among other great, young poets.) My mother suggested the title Dust to Dust since it starts with stardust and goes to hopeless dust. There is a lot of cycle/start and end stuff I put in here that isn't totally clear: Birth to death, garnet and tanzanite being the birthstones for january and december, hearts of gold to hearts of pyrite: fools gold, and some other probably I'm making this way to long again. Thank you for reading!
