Poetry is not

A “can” or “cannot” matter.

Jump in the poem

Do not plug your nose

Let the poem fill your lungs

Down your trachea

It feels like drowning

The riptide takes your body

Bloating, surfacing

It feels like rising

You feel yourself pushing through

Do you feel stronger?

Breach, lovely poet!

The poem sprays behind you

High up in the air

The author's comments:

In this series of five haikus I aim to describe the sensory experience of reading or writing a poem and overcoming apprehension to be swept away.

I am a senior at a private high school in Seattle, Washington. I am currently in Creative Writing and an Honors English course, though I’ve had a passion for writing since middle school. In my free time, I enjoy crafting and listening to music, along with writing a tabletop roleplaying game for my friends. I have a passion for anything that allows my imagination to roam free, which is why I wrote this love letter to poetry as a genre.
