I am as Important as Everybody Else
We are as crammed as a full jar of pickles, in the back seat,
My head rests on my cousin’s shoulder as my dad and uncle drove through the lonely, black roads,
I am as important as everybody else,
The restaurant owners don’t think so and they refuse to serve us,
The gas station owners don’t think so and they refuse to give us gas,
The store owners don’t think so and they refuse to let us use the restrooms,
But I am sure that I am as important as everybody else,
The road is a long, dark, black, never ending river of hate as the white men shout threats at us,
But we keep driving,
We won’t turn around just because they won’t let us stay in the same hotel as white people,
Because we are as important as everybody else,
My dad tries to explain why, but there is no explaining,
It doesn’t make sense,
All men are equal,
And I am as important as everybody else
