never regret anything that once made you smile.

Light snarls in her hair,
golden rays wind around her wrists.
Sunlight torches her vision,
blue skies smother her breathing.

So she runs,
runs from what she was taught,
runs from the light.
Runs to the sweet comfort of darkness.

Once upon a time,
there was a girl,
who thought things were only black or white,
dark or light.
Her world was so simple,
two tones, two choices.

In the shadows she feels free,
no one watching,
no one asking,
no one talking.

The silky black pulls her in,
showing her a life she didn’t know.
Every wish is granted,
every choice is right.

She plays life in this dark, easy world,
thinking everything will be alright.
But her colors get darker and darker
‘til she can’t see her own reflection.

White trips her, smothers her.
Black splinters her face in the mirror.
And just when she believes the fall into murky shadows will never end,
she crashes through color.

Once upon a time,
there was a girl,
who thought things were only black or white,
dark or light.
Her world was so simple,
two tones, two choices.
Until she shattered a rainbow,
and discovered color.
