"The Caged Bird Sings
Of a fearful trill
Of things unknown
But longed for still
But his tune is heard
On the distant hill
For the caged bird
Sings of freedom"
-Maya Angelou, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"

I stand over her now
Lost in my memories
Of when you looked and sang
But now she lies before me
Just as the good times began

We promised her a light
That would shine across the land
But now too soon
She lies before us
When life reached her end

Why do say these things
Why do we stand and pray
For the future of dream of
Is not same as today

And now the promise is broken
All the good, they say, dies young
And all we know now is gone
And every promise lost

When I arrive home
Lost in my cries
I find a letter inside
It’s from long ago and sorrowful
From one I once loved more

I promise I'll be better
It says with your goodbye
It says you loved me
And now I don't know
If That was only a lie

Why do say these things
Why do we stand and pray
For the future of dream of
Is not same as today

And now the promise is broken
All the good, they say, dies young
And all we know now is gone
And every promise lost

Why does the sun set now
Can't we have more light?
So we can cry one last time
For all those who failed the climb

It says you loved me
But now I don't know
But was it only a lie?

Why do say such things
Why do we stand and pray
For the future of dream of
Is not same as today

And now the promise is broken
All the good, they say, dies young
And all we know now is gone
And every promise lost

And now the promise is broken
All the good, they say, dies young
And all we know now is gone
And every promise lost

And now the promise is broken
All the good, they say, dies young
For all we know now is gone
And every promise lost

The author's comments:
I write to channel my emotions; that's all there is to it. I wrote this a week ago after finding a Christmas card from my dad in the bottom of my drawer. I read the note inside. It promised so much good and how he would get better and we would all be happy. The following year was the saddest, most painful year of my life, and nearly all the pain from that year was caused by him. And last year, my sister's best friend was diagnosed with Leukemia. She died a few months later. She was 14.
This poem is about lost promises. Everything we've ever said to anyone that never came true due to something we cannot control. It's not a happy topic. But it was something I had to do.
