Blue Bird
I sat out there one night 'til morn
 And whistled on the steps
And none did hear as they walked by
 Entranced in their own depths

With longing eyes, gazed far and wide
 Across the swinging grass
For just one bird to join me here
As all my days went past

 And underneath the summer sun
 That blazed somewhere above
I watched as all the world went by
 As people fell in love

And as the leaves would crumble down
 To start their lonely deaths
And pile upon the crimson ground
 I felt summer's last breath

Still whistling on the porch I was
 And birds flew all around
Their trills more lovely than my song
 Or any earthly sound

And still the sun would blaze above
But not for quite as long
And still the people walking by,
 The people still in love

And now the moon, it fills the sky
 At barely half past five
And all alone I sing since
 Scarcely anything's alive

And winter's breath, it settles down
 So deeply in a soul
 That hardly I remember
 Hazy warmth and summer gold

And all the people that once walked
 'Neath summer skies above
Have now a grey veil o'er their eyes
In which I see no love

But still my bird comes by the porch
 Deep blue e'en in December
And sings with me my lonely song
 That no one else remembers
