You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better. -Anne Lamott, from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life.

When I was just a child I would stare up at the sky
And pray to this big God that one day I would learn to fly
I would tape together feathers; I would glue them to my arms
And deep inside I knew this would never cause me harm
The wishing and the hoping and the dreaming late at night
Just anticipation coursing in my hands before the flight
And I fell, so quickly, it felt like flying just the same
It felt just like every time I hear you say my name

Because sometimes you don't know if you're flying or you fall
You feel so big above it, but you always end up small
Your heart begins to quiver, and your hands begin to shake
And you wonder if you're dreaming or if you are awake

My mother rushed to catch me, but she always saw too late
And my skin began to splinter and my back broke from the weight
I laid beneath the sky I had once called my home
But when you aren't born with feathers, you seem to end up alone
Everybody cries in anger that no one told you this before
Why would I listen to the ground when I was born to soar?
They tried to stitch me up and they threw out all my feathers
I knew in that moment we would never be together

Because sometimes you don't know if you're flying or you fall
You feel so big above it, but you always end up small
Your heart begins to quiver, and your hands begin to shake
And you wonder if you're dreaming or if you are awake

And I never thought of flying as I grew into this age
I never thought I would consider you just another stage
I thought I could end up somewhere high above the clouds
But I realize my foolishness when I say this out loud

Because sometimes you don't know if you're flying or you fall
You feel so big above it, but you always end up small
Your heart begins to quiver, and your hands begin to shake
And you wonder if you're dreaming or if you are awake
